PointCloudComponentCopier
Copies selected component values onto either a new or existing component.
Typical Uses
- Creating copies of components and their values to meet processing requirements
- Creating backup copies of values before manipulating them
How does it work?
The PointCloudComponentCopier receives point cloud features, copies specified components and their values onto new or existing components, then outputs the modified point cloud feature.
The Source Component remains intact, and the Target Component will be created (if new) or have its values overwritten (if existing).
Multiple components may be copied.
Examples
Example: Copying component values
In this example, we want to create backup copies of the x, y, and z component values in a point cloud before performing manipulations on them.
Note that the source point cloud has x, y, and z components.
The point cloud is routed into a PointCloudComponentCopier.
In the parameters dialog, we make three entries in the Components to Copy table - one for each of x, y, and z. New component names are assigned in the Target Component column, which will be added as new components.
The output point cloud feature has three new components, containing a copy of the original components’ values, and is passed on into the workspace for further processing.
If desired, another PointCloudComponentCopier could be used after x,y, and z are manipulated - copying from the new orig_x, orig_y, and orig_z back onto x, y, and z - to restore the original values.
Usage Notes
- To create or update components with values more complex than simply copying, consider using the PointCloudExpressionEvaluator.
- To add a new component with a constant value, use the PointCloudComponentAdder.
- To copy values from a raster onto point cloud components, use the PointCloudOnRasterComponentSetter.
- To change the name of a component while retaining its values (elevation to z, for example), use the PointCloudComponentRenamer.
Choosing a Point Cloud Transformer
FME has a selection of transformers for working specifically with point cloud data.

Extracts the geometry properties of a point cloud feature and exposes them as attributes, optionally checking for their existence, retrieving component properties, and finding minimum and maximum values. Extents may also be recalculated and updated. |

Decodes a binary attribute containing encoded point clouds stored as Blobs, replacing the feature’s geometry with the decoded point cloud. |

Reduces the number of points in a point cloud by selectively keeping points based on the shape of the point cloud. The simplified and removed points are output as two discrete point clouds. |

This transformer accepts only point cloud features.

<Rejected>
Non-point cloud features will be routed to the <Rejected> port, as well as invalid point clouds.
Rejected features will have an fme_rejection_code attribute with one of the following values:
INVALID_GEOMETRY_TYPE
MISSING_FEATURE_COMPONENTS
Rejected Feature Handling: can be set to either terminate the translation or continue running when it encounters a rejected feature. This setting is available both as a default FME option and as a workspace parameter.

Each line in this table specifies a component to be copied, and parameters for doing so. Multiple components may be modified.

Note that the drop-down menu for both Source and Target Component provides a list of standard component names. User-specified component names may be entered directly in both columns.
Editing Transformer Parameters
Transformer parameters can be set by directly entering values, using expressions, or referencing other elements in the workspace such as attribute values or user parameters. Various editors and context menus are available to assist. To see what is available, click beside the applicable parameter.
How to Set Parameter Values
Defining Values
There are several ways to define a value for use in a Transformer. The simplest is to simply type in a value or string, which can include functions of various types such as attribute references, math and string functions, and workspace parameters.
Using the Text Editor
The Text Editor provides a convenient way to construct text strings (including regular expressions) from various data sources, such as attributes, parameters, and constants, where the result is used directly inside a parameter.
Using the Arithmetic Editor
The Arithmetic Editor provides a convenient way to construct math expressions from various data sources, such as attributes, parameters, and feature functions, where the result is used directly inside a parameter.
Conditional Values
Set values depending on one or more test conditions that either pass or fail.

Expressions and strings can include a number of functions, characters, parameters, and more.
When setting values - whether entered directly in a parameter or constructed using one of the editors - strings and expressions containing String, Math, Date/Time or FME Feature Functions will have those functions evaluated. Therefore, the names of these functions (in the form @<function_name>) should not be used as literal string values.

Generally resets the table to its initial state, and may provide additional options to remove invalid entries. Behavior varies between transformers. |
